Another clear blue sky day as we do a bit of Island hopping. Catching the ferry to Yell where we hot foot it up to catch another one to Unst. Here we have a walk around Hermaness
A Rock Pipit poses for us
Sky lark
Plenty of Bonxies (Great Skua) around - although they are not yet here in their full numbers. Luckily for us they are not fully nesting yet. When they are they are ferocious. Bombing you as you walk through with great talons with which they aim for your head! Must remember to come back in May if we visit again!
Bonxie having a poo!
Muckle Flugga Lighthouse comes into view. This used to be the most northerly inhabited part of Great Britain - until in became automated!
Large white areas of rock - this is a Gannet colony. They are white birds, but the white is not just the birds, it's the mainly mess they make!
It really is a lovely day - the sea is flat calm which proves how still it is - a rarity for Shetland
And to prove how warm it is - T shirt weather!
A ewe adds scale to the dramatic scenery
Even Shetland has bunnies
Poor Breeze isn't getting into many pictures this week, mainly because she is often on a (long) lead to ensure that she doesn't fly off a cliff
We sit for a while and see what looks like a swift flying below us - but swifts don't land. Yes! We've found some more puffins!!
Now you see me....
Now you don't (if you look closely you can just see the tip of it's tail as it enters it's burrow)
After such an amazing cliff top walk Breeze gets her chance to get in a few pictures as we visit Norwick Beach
Our next stop is at Haroldswick where there is a replica viking longhouse and boat
And then it's time to head back to catch the Ferry back to Yell
The chance for a cute picture of three Oyster catchers as we make our way back through Yell
As the Haa begins to roll in
Then it's the BIG ferry back from Yell to Mainland to pick up fish and chips from Frankies, the UK's most Northerly Fish and Chip shop. Just across the Voe from Richard and Alison's house.
I'm so jealous Rachel, not sure I can look at anymore, ha,ha! I can see why you needed to keep Breeze on a lead!
ReplyDeleteYou would absolutely love it Maggie. No mountains, but plenty of hills and so quiet and unspoilt!
