Shetland - Day 2

So, Richard has always led us to believe that the weather is never good in Shetland. We wake up to a stunning day - looks like your plan to keep us away has failed miserably Richard!!
We are going to the sourthern tip of Shetland Mainland this morning. On our way we pass the main airport - Sumburgh, where we have to wait for a plane to cross the road as it takes off!

Then on to Sumburgh Head

Where we park up and walk up to the lighthouse

The cliffs are covered in Guillemots

Then suddenly we spotted our first Puffin of the day. It was worth the twelve hour ferry crossing just for this moment alone :-)

We walked along the cliff tops around the southern tip of the island. Beautiful scenery.

And beautiful birds!

A Razor Bill

Do you get the feeling I like Puffins?

Having had a good look around Sumburgh Head we travel back up Mainland to visit St Ninian's Isle on the western side of the Island. Alison spots a beach full of seals as we are driving along.

After a bite to eat, we set of to walk over and around St Ninian's Isle. St Ninian's Isle is a small tied island connected by the largest tombolo in the UK to the south-western coast of the Mainland, Shetland, in Scotland. The tombolo, known locally as an ayre from the Old Norse for "gravel bank", is 500 metres long.Wikipedia

Breeze enjoys the Tombolo. Watch her here!

The remains of St Ninian's Chapel

Breeze and Alison pose on the trig point - it's a bit breezy!

Suddenly something appears in the sky - not any normal Shetland bird - it's an Airbus A400M Atlas. All the way from Brize Norton. A very unusual sight.

After the excitement of the plane, we get back to the serious business of watching wildlife and enjoying the jaw dropping scenery
